Driving Inclusive and Sustainable Growth Through Water-Based Resources
Tanzania is blessed with vast aquatic resources — including a long Indian Ocean coastline, three of Africa’s Great Lakes (Victoria, Tanganyika, and Nyasa), numerous rivers, wetlands, and inland water bodies. These environments are not just ecological treasures; they are economic frontiers with enormous untapped potential.
At TCI Foundation, we are committed to unlocking this potential through a robust Blue Economy agenda that places people, sustainability, and innovation at the heart of every initiative. Our programs aim to transform lives, strengthen local economies, and preserve aquatic ecosystems — across all regions of Tanzania.
We work closely with artisanal fishers and small-scale aquaculture operators to enhance productivity while protecting aquatic biodiversity. Through training, access to modern fishing equipment, and sustainable aquaculture practices, we help increase income and food security — from Lake Victoria to the coast of Mtwara.
We also advocate for gender inclusion in the fisheries value chain, ensuring that women — who often work in fish processing and trading — receive the support and recognition they deserve.
We promote seaweed farming, shellfish cultivation, and innovative inland aquaculture models as climate-resilient and inclusive livelihood options. Our support ranges from technical training and startup inputs to market development and cooperative formation.
By encouraging marine farming, we are not only creating jobs but also contributing to climate adaptation, especially for women and youth living in vulnerable coastal and lakeside zones.
Our environmental agenda prioritizes the protection and restoration of mangroves, coral reefs, wetlands, and other critical blue ecosystems. These natural systems serve as buffers against climate change, nurseries for marine life, and sources of resilience for nearby communities.
We implement community-led conservation programs and collaborate with local authorities and researchers to support science-based ecosystem management and climate education.
We recognize that data-driven decisions lead to better outcomes. TCI Foundation partners with academic institutions, think tanks, and government agencies to generate evidence that shapes policies, improves investment targeting, and scales successful models.
We actively engage in national and regional dialogues to advocate for fair, inclusive, and environmentally sound governance of marine and inland water resources.
The blue economy is not only about traditional livelihoods — it is also a space for bold innovation. We support entrepreneurs working in areas like eco-tourism, sustainable packaging from marine biomass, solar-powered fishing boats, and digital market platforms for fish traders.
We provide mentorship, business incubation, access to finance, and linkages with investors — focusing especially on startups led by young people and women.
We envision a Tanzania where blue economy growth is inclusive, innovative, and sustainable — delivering long-term benefits to people, communities, and nature alike.
